Speaking. Ask your partner the following questions.

1. What is a culture ? (literature, language, music, cuisine etc…?)
2. What is the most interesting about your culture?
3. What do you know about your culture?
4. What do you like about your culture?
5. What don’t you like about your culture?
6. Are you proud of your culture?
7. Is there any essential difference between your culture and the others?
8. Could you marry someone from a completely different culture? Why? Why not?
9. Do you know what people from other countries think about your culture?
10. Which culture do you admire , and why?
11. Which culture don’t you like, and why?
12. What may surprise foreigners in your culture?
13. Do you know any aspects of foreign cultures that you consider unusual in your country? Give examples.
14. Have you ever experienced any cultural differences among people?
15. How important is it to know the culture of the country that you are going to visit?
16. What is considered polite in your country?
17. What is considered impolite in your country?
18. Do you know people from other cultures?
19. How do you feel when you are in a completely new culture?
20. What does the proverb “when in Rome, do as the Romans do ” mean? Is it a good piece of advice ?
21. “The more you know the culture, the better you use the language”. Do you agree with the statement ?
22. If you could choose 3 aspects of your culture to show them to future generations , what would they be?

 1. Choose the four factors below which you think are the most important in creating a culture?

  • Geography Historical events
  • Ceremonies and festivals
  • Social customs and traditions Religion
2. What do you miss most about country or culture when you go abroad?

3. Do you think cultures are becoming more alike? Is this a good or bad thing?

For example, think about:
  • a. improved communications;
  • b. cheap foreign travel;
  • c. global business;

4. How important are the following things when doing business in your country?

Are they: a. important b. not important c. best avoided?
  • - exchanging business card;
  • - shaking hands;
  • - kissing;
  • - socializing with contacts;
  • - small talk before meetings;
  • - accepting interruption;
  • - using first names;
  • - formality (how you dress, how you talk to colleagues, what names you use,
  • etc);
  • - punctuality;
  • - humour;
  • - giving presents;
  • - being direct (saying exactly what you think).

Look at  a picture of a plan of the house with the accompanying mp3 listening of a person describing various parts of the house such as

  • hall
  • balcony
  • stairs
  • patio
  • bedroom
  • bathroom and so on

Identify the different parts of the house.
